Here is my final design for the CD. The theme I decided on was using a compilation of influential songs from the late 70s to the early 90s. The title,
Regression in Progression, relates to the theme as I went back to my younger years for inspiration. The focal image is a retro toy robot which seemed like a great visual for my theme. I wanted to give the project a vintage look, inspired by the package design of the boxes these robots came. The image was altered in Photoshop while the type, eye beams, and background were created in Illustrator. I used the Almag (Rough) font for the title to give it a bit of a weathered look. Keeping with the theme, I reversed the word "progression," eluding to the backward direction in time. Additionally, I purposely colored the "In" yellow to compliment the yellow eye beams to draw your eye back to the type and merged the words "In" and "Progression" symbolizing the regression of time and memories. Oddly enough, using the reflect option when transforming an object will work when using the regular text tool, but not the text on a path tool which was used to create the circular path of the title. I turned them into vector objects using "create outlines" and then I was able to reflect the type. The background has an "outer glow" filter to give a faded look around the edges and enhances the solid color background. although it looks as though I could have increased the glow factor a bit. The back cover is essentially the same set up, using InDesign to create the type and downloaded logos of Atlantic Records and the CD Digital Audio. I'm sure there was a way of eliminating the white around them, and hopefully someone may have some advice regarding this. It may have something to do with where and how they were downloaded. Fortunately there were ample photos of this robot allowing me to continue the design to the back cover displaying the back of the toy robot without batteries. I made this image smaller to show more of the toy robot. There is some possible symbolism there, revealing the vintage aspect of our memories and how some things, no matter how old, still evoke strong responses in each of us. The inner pages reflect the color scheme used for the covers. The Alamg font was used for the song titles to carry over the type design. The lyrics were quite lengthy for some of the songs. To ensure they weren't too small to read, I kept the font at 6 pt. This left me room to create negative space in the lower right side of each spread where I inserted various Photoshop altered images of the robot using the Trace Contour filter. The images reminded me of x-rays, so placing them inside the CD booklet made sense. This project was very challenging, but rewarding. I learned a great deal from this.

Here are some pics of the CD design constructed. Even following the crop marks, it wasn't as easy as I thought.
