M1 CP Artist Statement

 Welcome to my blog.

There is a connection to design that is acts as an undercurrent through everything that I create. Be it an illustration or book cover design, a sense of flow and thought is present. I like to have the feeling of dynamic movement, even if is a portrait illustration. In my mind, art is meant to inspire. Much of my inspiration comes from experiencing creations from other artists, no matter the medium.

While my influences are many, what I create should not necessarily reflect this, rather communicating my passion for creating pieces that exude their own personality, no matter what the medium. Each piece of art should be like a snowflake–no two are alike. A style is present, but that is not what drives the creation of my art. If I do my job, then each piece of art stands on its own for its own reason, and serves a purpose.

I have found a special affinity for black and white illustration. Using pen and ink has been my favorite medium. There is an influence here that comes from my love of sequential art or comic book art. There is a special attraction to the way the nib or brush moves over the paper and the rich blackness of India ink. Controlling the ink but infusing a relaxed feel is my goal. My favorite subject is the human body. It is a fascinating machine and capturing the subtitles expressed through the face and posture.

My design work is similar in that I approach each piece so that it communicates a message that resonates with the viewer. I have a bit of an old-fashioned philosophy when it comes to logo design. The design should hold up in black and white as well as color. Yes, I am aware that technology offers a multitude of color, but this self-imposed constraint helps me see the possibilities of positive and negative space. The goal is to convey the intended message in a minimalist fashion. Simplicity is saying more with less.
